New walks leaflets produced by KPC

Kirkburton Parish Council has produced 5 walking leaflets based on the parishes which make up KP. Each leaflets consists of 2 walks [of approx 4 - 7 miles in length] centred around one of the areas. A local character is featured on each map explaining a little about the history of each place in rhyme! The leaflet are very colourful but are not very practical to use when out walking.

A walk of 6 miles around Kirkheaton is featured.
For concise instructions about each walk go to www.kirburtonparishwalks.co.uk

Inconsiderate drivers causing problems at roadworks at Town Top

Just wanted to contact you regarding the on going road works on Town Road. As a resident next to these works my family and I are greatly concerned about the safety of these and the residents.
My car was smashed yesterday morning outside my house by someone running through a red light which we have been witnessing as a regular thing. The safety of people is in danger and if people keep ignoring the signs someone will get killed. We watch from our window every day and witness loads of vehicles that are too impatient to wait and are then causing grid locks.

I wondered if anyone else feels strongly about this .

The Big Picnic DVD – just magic!

Just spent a happy half hour watching the Big Picnic DVD. Magic! Despite the weather everyone seems to have had a great time. I was stuck on a stall freezing so didn’t see all what had been going on so it was great to see so many people entering into the spirit of it. The shots of children playing games especially the little girls doing the tug of war, are alone  worth the price of the DVD.

Well done Mark – on capturing the essence of the day!

Mystery digging rumour

Recent activity on the  land in front of the doctors’ surgery has lead to speculation of its possible use as a temporary burial site for Kirklees Council. The council’s application for a burial site at Stirley below Castle Hill has run into problems and it now urgently needs additional land for burials.

However Yetton Together spokesperson Keith Durkin was able to reassure residents that the community group was responsible.
‘We are digging over the land  to prepare it for the planting of about 1000 petunias over the next few weeks. The YT 200 Club has given us £100 to create a attractive display. This is a temporary measure. We hope to have something more permanent by next year. We would welcome anyone who wants to help with the planting – 10:30 Saturday June 30th’

Any suggestions on how it should be developed? One resident would like to see some public art on the land.

Volunteers wanted – Saturday 23rd June

More volunteer gardeners and workers are needed on Saturday 23rd June for an hour or so  to help ‘beautifying’ the village. We intend to plant up the circular area in front of the bus terminus and clean up other areas – depending on how many people turn up. Last week 8 people turned up and dug much of the ’roundabout ‘ up. This weekend we hope to complete the digging over and add fertiliser to the ground. It is anticipated that planting will take place on Saturday 30th June

ALL WELCOME – Meet at the piece of ground in front of the bus terminus at 10am.

Please bring your own tools and gloves if possible as we have limited equipment.

Hundreds of visitors enjoy the Kirkheaton Arts Festival

Kirkheaton Art Festival
Over 600 people came this year (our seventh) and enjoyed what everyone agreed was the biggest and best display yet. Literally hundreds of items from photographs to quilts, painting to sugarcraft, wooden models to embroidery, filled the parish church. Live musical acts on the Saturday and Monday and a superb display of material from Kirkheaton School completed the event. Once again we managed to unearth more local people with some great artistic and creative talent.

Thanks to everyone who put in so much effort and thanks to everyone who came. And thanks to the Co-op in Mirfield who once again sponsored our refreshments.
