How lucky were we this year for Kirkheaton Gala – the 52nd!   It was a brilliant day and thanks to everyone who helped make it so successful.

The procession paraded around the village led by the Town Crier, Vic and many of the local groups – Guides, Brownies, Cubs, Beavers, Rainbows, Kirkheaton Junior Football Club, the Huddersfield Crusaders Majorettes with Musica  (Kirklees Youth Band) providing the music.
The vintage car, kindly loaned by  Cartwright’s Cars carried our new Gala Queen, Evie Wooler and her attendants Lily Bolton-Herbert, Abbie Morris and Ella Summerscales to the official opening by the Mayor of Kirklees, Christine Iredale ably escorted by her Consort (and husband) Robert.
The Mayor said it was a delight to be returning to Kirkheaton where she lived and went to school for many years.  Going into the Community Centre, which was her previous school, brought back lots of wonderful memories. The cubs presented a hamper to the Mayor and Jean Beverley was given a gift voucher for her many years of service to both the Gala and the Scout & Guide organisation.
Volunteer D.J. Richard Tree provided us with music throughout the day and introduced the entertainment:  Musica Youth Band; Huddersfield Crusaders Majorettes, Fidget Feet (Street Dance); Dog Obedience, Claire Doosey (dancing class) and the return of the ever popular Rock Choir.

Tilly the Terrier, Huddersfield Town Mascot and girlfriend of Terry, joined the celebration and gave out free Tic tacs kindly donated by Huddersfield Town.
There were lots of interesting food and craft stalls and children’s activities and Yetty’s Cafe provided home baked cakes and refreshments.

Geoff Harrison a local farmer who has lived in the village all his life, brought along his Massey Ferguson 35 Red tractor built in 1963.  The Police vehicle did a surprise visit and children enjoyed trying out the siren and sitting in the driving seat.
Thanks go to all our sponsors and people who donated prizes for all our stalls, our wonderful volunteers and Leaders and the Gala Committee – lots of hard work but well worth it when so many of our community come together for a fun day and so much more enjoyable when the weather is so good to us.
Thank you to all the people who turned up on the day to support the event and join in an important aspect of our village life.
