Whitley circular
A varied walk taking in vistas over Emley, Castle Hill, Dewsbury and Huddersfield

Start at the side gate of the church opposite the Beaumont Arms. Cross the road and follow the green lane by the back of the Beaumont [sp] Go through the gate and immediately turn left following the wall up the field to a gap between houses leading into Laneside. Turn right, cross the road and after about 60 m turn left up a path [sp]

Follow the path up the hillside until it comes out onto a tarmaced road [Stafford Hill Lane] cross and go along Mountain Way. Continue along Mountain Way following the path behind the cemetery and into the old brickworks where it brings you out into Laneside.

Continue along here until you come to a turning on the left sp] – Long Tongue Scrog. Continue up the lane until you reach the gates of a house – Carr Mount . Turn right into the field and continue forward keeping the hedge on your left. Follow the path down to a part derelict farm house. Go through the farmyard on to a track. Just before the first house at Houses Hill turn left [sp] and follow the path around the side of the houses and across the next field through a kissing gate into the road [sp]

Cross the road and continue forward on some rough ground over some duck boarding and a stile into the next field. Veering slightly left go up the field and the down to a stile in the far corner. [Don’t go through the wide gap in front of you] Follow the path through a narrow, sometimes overgrown valley, over 2 ladder stiles until it comes out at Gregory Farm. Follow the farm track up to the Grange Moor road.

Cross the road and follow the path [sp] through the buildings of Liley Hall down the field sides and keeping right at the next junction. Continue through the trees. At the next junction turn right up a tarmaced road towards some houses. Turn left in front of the houses [arrow] and go through a gateway onto a drive. Keep left and the path goes up the hillside. Continue up the hillside. When you come to a wood the path splits – take the left fork through the wood out into the field beyond. Continue up the hillside keeping the field boundary on your right up to the road at Upper Whitley. Within 20 m to your left is Charlotte’s Ice Cream parlour if you care to indulge [they sell coffee, food etc as well]

Turn right and cross the road onto Falhouse Lane. Continue down the lane and start up the other side. Turn right immediately after Pendle Hill Grange.[sp] Follow the path through the top of someone’s garden into a wooded valley. Keep straight along the top over some duck boards and then follow a rather indistinct path through the trees – still keeping the boundary on your left. Leave the wood and continue along the side of the valley until you come to two lone trees next to the path. Turn left immediately after the trees and follow what was a field boundary to a finger post. Turn right here across the field and head for the stile [metal steps] at the corner of the field in front. Follow the path to the road.

At the road turn right and then left about 40m further on [sp]. Keeping the trees on your right follow the path through a series of fields [arrows] squeezing through a rather overgrown path way between a field fence and trees. Continue straight through the next field [keeping to the left edge] and onto a lane. Turn right down the lane to Lepton Square. Follow the path through the hamlet onto a road. Turn left and follow the road round to the left to reach the road at Botany Bay.

Turn right and take the first footpath sign left after the road junction with Knotty Lane Town Gate]. The path squeezes through some buildings into a field. Follow the path to a gap into the next field. Here turn sharp right and cross the field. The path then goes along the edge of a number of fields to reach Lucy Lane. Here turn left along the road to its junction with Gawthorpe Lane. Cross the road and go over the stile into the field opposite. Follow the path through a number of fields.keep straightr on pass Lascelles Hall Cricket Club down into the valleywhere you can see St John’s to your left. Cross the bridge turn left into the field and make you way back to the start or in my case The Beaumont for a well earned drink!
